GENERAL PSYCHIATRY

What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and management of mental illness. Psychiatrists tie their training in medicine (neuroscience, biology, chemistry, pharmacology) with their understanding of psychology (mind and behaviour) to provide holistic and individualised care for the patient.

Classifying symptoms and disorders.

Many patients’ symptoms defy traditional diagnostic classifications of mental disorders, but remain significant and warrant treatment in order to reduce the psychological burden on the patient.

Often a combination of approaches is the recommended course of treatment.

FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY

What is forensic psychiatry?

Forensic psychiatry is a specialised area of practice where psychiatry intersects with the law. A forensic psychiatrist must, after general specialist training in psychiatry, complete further specialised studies. Forensic psychiatrists acquire specialised skills in both criminal and civil matters. Criminal matters involve psychiatrically-ill offenders with typical mental illness, personality disorders, or problem behaviours. Civil matters may involve workplace or family disputes.

The practice of forensic psychiatry is unique because it involves a lot of assessment, and not only standard psychiatric treatment. Forensic psychiatrists often serve as expert witnesses to the Courts.

No self-referrals.

Please note, Dr. Rakov is unable to accept self-referrals for forensic matters. These referrals must come from your lawyer, insurer, or a statutory body.
